Unix Printing

Note that CUPS printing is already configured for you on all of the CS and ECE Linux Lab workstations (Halligan120, JCC235, and JCC240). Simply press the CTL-P hot key combo on your Linux desktop and choose your preferred printer from the printer list dialog box.

To add CUPS printers to your own UNIX-based system, visit http://cups.eecs.tufts.edu:631/printers/ and figure out which printer(s) you want. The numeric ones (e.g., hp118) are nearly all Halligan room numbers. The exceptions are:

  • hp2702, which is in room 2702 at 200 Boston Ave
  • hp235, an HP printer in the Cummings 235 Linux Lab
  • hp240, an HP printer in the Cummings 240 Linux Lab

The ones with names (e.g. hpdls) are all specific to that person or lab; please do not use them without talking to the person or lab first.

Note in particular that all the printers named konica or canon are large multifunction photocopiers. They can run large jobs quickly, but they are by far the most expensive printers to use: the department pays a per-page fee for them — more for color. Please avoid using the konica and canon printers where possible.

Once you’ve chosen a set of printers to use on your computer, you’ll need administrator permissions to set them up. Assuming you’re in a Linux GNOME 3 interface, the print configuration is under Applications->Sundry->Print Settings. That should pop up a dialog with an “Add” button in it, plus whatever printers you already have configured. Click “Add”. This should pop up a “New Printer” dialog. Choose “Enter URI”, then in the “Enter device URI” dialog, the path to the printer. This will be of the form:

ipp://cups.eecs.tufts.edu/printers/printername

So if you want hp235, it would be:

ipp://cups.eecs.tufts.edu/printers/hp235
